POST COVID-19 ACTION PLAN

The COVID-19 pandemic has in a couple of weeks brought the
South African Economy and businesses as a whole to its knees,
the entire world has come to a realization that business and
trade as we knew it will never be the same again. Businesses in
all sectors will have to reevaluate, adapt and change in almost
all areas of their business. Both employers and employees were
forced, in a very short time frame, to come up with processes
and procedures to make sure that companies are still able to
operate during this lock-down period to some extent to generate
income.

This pandemic has taught South Africans and evidently the
world that the one area where we all have become extremely
complaisant and as a result, we have brought upon ourselves a
pandemic that will take years to recover from both economically
and socially is Hygiene.

POST LOCK-DOWN

One positive impact this Pandemic will have on society is that
the human race has been humbled once again and the
realization that we are and will always be vulnerable to
Biological attacks, has become an unpleasant truth. We have
been made aware of how fragile life is and that we need make a
conscious effort to live a healthier and more hygienic lifestyle.
This is very clearly shown throughout history. After the 1919
Spanish flu where over 20 Million people died worldwide, the
entire world had to relook personal hygiene and hygiene as a
whole. Scientists and chemical engineers turned their focus to
detergents and soaps. Strict health and safety regulations were
implemented in public areas such as hospitals, schools and work
place, to only name a few. The world re-evaluated, adapted and
changed, unfortunately after a millennium we have once again
became complacent. It is still very uncertain when this lock-down
period will end and what regulations will be put in place by the
Government afterwards, but one thing is for certain, Health and
Safety regulations in the work place will be scrutinized
thoroughly throughout the world and strict policies will be
implemented.

Our economy cannot handle this lock down for an extended
period and Government will have no choice but to lift all
restrictions on trade whether the COVID-19 virus has been
completely eliminated or not. If this is the case what contingency
plan do we have? Whose role will it be to implement and enforce
the regulations set out by Governing Bodies? Who will be Held
accountable?

EMPLOYER responsibility

It is the employer’s responsibility to provide a safe and healthy environment to its employees. After the lock-down period majority of office buildings, production plants, warehouses etc will be opened for the first time in weeks if not months. These areas will be contaminated with a variety of Pathogens, Bacteria and Viruses. At this time COVID-19 will be the least of your worries as these Pathogens have had weeks/months to
spread.

  •  Your 1st responsibility as an employer/landlord will be to completely disinfect the building from top to bottom. This includes AC/ventilation systems, washing of Carpets, surface disinfecting, Deep Chemical clean of all Ablution Facilities as well as kitchens and canteens. All office equipment (PC’s, Phones, Printers etc) to be disinfected.
  • Secondly, a comprehensive Hygiene maintenance plan should be drawn up and implemented. All cleaning staff to be trained and monitored. Chemical use for different industries and areas is of utmost importance.
  • Companies providing cutlery and crockery should be changed to disposable and recyclable.
  • Gatherings such as meetings etc, should be avoided as far as possible. There are various tools available such as ZOOM and Skype that can assist in this matter.
  • “Pool” vehicles should be monitored and sanitized every time there is a change of driver.
